Prop Firm Practice Account: Free With 3 of 4 Account Types
What a practice account copies from your challenge, what it cannot do, and which Phoenix accounts include one.
Yes. At Phoenix Trader Funding, every Classic, Daily and Spark challenge comes with a free practice account. It copies your challenge's profit goal, drawdown and position size, resets for free as often as you like, and you can open as many as you want. It can never be funded, and Merit does not have one.

What a prop firm practice account is
A prop firm practice account is a second account that runs on the same rules as your paid challenge but is fully disconnected from it. Nothing you trade there touches your challenge balance, profit goal or drawdown, and nothing you earn there carries over.
At Phoenix Trader Funding the practice account comes with the challenge itself. You find it from the button at the top right of your current challenge in the dashboard. Practice accounts carry an orange background, so you can tell at a glance which account you are about to trade.
Merit has no practice account. It is a 30 calendar day assessment with a single attempt for the life of the account, so there is nothing to reset and nothing to practise against.
What your practice account copies
A practice account takes its parameters from the challenge it came with, so the numbers you practise against are the numbers you face. Profit goal, drawdown and maximum position size all match.
The profit goal runs from $600 on a Daily 10K or a Spark 10K to $6,000 on a Classic 100K, and a practice account carries the same figure as the challenge it belongs to.
| Account and size | Profit goal | Trailing drawdown | Max contracts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 25K | $1,500 | $1,500 | 1 (15 micros) |
| Classic 50K | $3,000 | $2,000 | 3 (30 micros) |
| Classic 100K | $6,000 | $3,000 | 6 (60 micros) |
| Daily 10K | $600 | $600 | 6 micros only |
| Daily 25K | $1,500 | $1,500 | 1 (15 micros) |
| Daily 50K | $3,000 | $2,000 | 3 (30 micros) |
| Spark 10K | $600 | $400 | 1 (10 micros) |
| Spark 25K | $1,500 | $1,000 | 2 (20 micros) |
A trailing drawdown is a floor that sits a fixed distance below your peak balance and rises as the peak rises. It is measured at end of day in every evaluation, and it stops rising once it reaches the starting balance.
Position size is capped the same way: a Daily 10K practice account allows 6 micros only, a Classic 50K one allows 3 contracts (30 micros), and a Spark 25K one allows 2 contracts (20 micros).
One difference to know about: a Spark funded account trails its drawdown in real time, while every evaluation, Spark included, trails at end of day. A practice account copies the challenge, so it rehearses the evaluation rules. Check the funded rules before you pass.
Why free resets matter
A reset starts an account over after a breach. A reset on a challenge costs a fee unless you hold a banked reset coupon, while a reset on a practice account costs nothing and you can do it as many times as you want.
The exact fee for your own account sits beside the Reset button on your trader dashboard. For the full mechanics of a challenge reset, read the answer page on how an evaluation reset works.
What to use it for
Every limit on a practice account matches your challenge, so anything you learn there holds on the paid account.
- Learn the rules. On a Spark 10K practice account, watch the $400 trailing drawdown follow your highest end-of-day balance up and stop at the starting balance, as it does in the evaluation, before that movement can cost you anything.
- Test a setup.Practice accounts are unlimited, so you can open two on a Classic 50K challenge and run one setup on each, both against the same $2,000 drawdown and 3-contract cap, then compare the results.
- Switch on a bad day. After a rough session, nothing obliges you to keep trading the paid challenge. If a Classic 50K has used most of its $2,000 drawdown, move to the orange practice account, trade the rest of the day out there, and return when trading feels routine again.
The third use comes before the breach. Moving to practice leaves your challenge exactly where the bad session left it, drawdown buffer included, and a breach you never reach is a reset you never pay for.
Practice first, or reset the challenge?
A paid reset restarts the challenge itself and practice does not, so the choice turns on whether the same mistake will happen again.
| Situation | Best first move |
|---|---|
| You hold a banked reset coupon | Reset the challenge, it costs nothing |
| Classic challenge breached a few days before its 30-day renewal | Trade on practice until the renewal resets the challenge at no extra charge |
| One identifiable mistake | Reset the challenge and carry on |
| A habit that keeps repeating | Test the fix on practice first |
| A setup you have not run before | Try it on practice, where resets are free |
A failed Classic challenge is reset at its 30-day renewal at no extra charge. That route belongs to Classic, which bills monthly, while Daily and Spark are paid once and have no renewal to wait for.
What a practice account cannot do
- It is fully disconnected from your challenge: nothing you do on one moves the other.
- It can never be funded, however well it goes.
- Profit on practice never converts into challenge progress, and there is no partial credit.
A practice account cannot reproduce how you behave when the account matters. Treat it as a rehearsal of the rules, not a forecast of your result on the challenge.
To compare the account types side by side, the evaluations page lists every size and profit goal. The Help Center article on how a practice account works covers the dashboard steps.
